June 4, 2004, Newsletter Issue #7: What do you want? Money!

Tip of the Week

Friends and family may be more than willing to give wedding gifts of money, particularly if they have some idea how the couple intends to spend it. One way to make everyone happy is to let close family and members of the bridal party spread the word that while any gift would be appreciated, what you’d really love would be cash for your honeymoon, the down payment on your first house, or whatever it is you’re dreaming of. Your maid of honor, best man and siblings can then share that information with your college friends, co-workers and extended family. That way, the bride and groom won’t be considered rude by announcing, “Show us the money!”

Another great way to get those checks, rather than duplicate vases, china and multiple small appliances, is to sign up with a registry that specializes in gifts of cash.

Some honeymoon registries charge only a small service fee for your own fun registry and wedding website to help finance your dreams. But be sure to find a honeymoon registry that doesn’t charge you a sign-up or registration fee! That way, signing up will be risk-free.

Registries are a great way to let guests know what you want to do with the cash gifts and, at the same time, they can help you organize your thank-you-notes list. Some even offer free wedding web pages (which can offer links to more traditional gift registries) and bundles of free registry cards for your friends and family to pass along.
