Tip of the Week
Tropics
Many couples choose to honeymoon in the tropics, so let’s start in Hawaii, the Caribbean, Fiji, Tahiti, etc. Of course, this list will also apply to Australia during our winter, the Southern States, island cruises, and possibly even Paris when it sizzles.
Lightweight clothing: cotton, linen (if you’ll have access to an iron), or silk. One or two (or more, if you’ll be staying at a very fancy hotel or in a major city) cocktail dresses or generally fancy outfits. Hubby will need a lightweight suit and tie, as well a couple of nice shirts. Bathing suits (and a cover-up for you) Beach towels (if they’re not provided by the hotel) Sunhats Sandals Comfortable walking shoes Lightweight cotton socks (at least two pairs) Sunscreen Serious moisturizer Lip balm containing sunscreen Talc and deodorant Insect repellant Light water-resistant jacket for sailing, cool evenings, etc. Shorts Long pants Skirt or two (but if you’re not going to a resort, ask around to see if your mini will be appropriate) Roomy straw or canvas bag Underwater camera Sunglasses Shampoo and conditioner designed to remove salt and chlorinated water
Desert
The desert is beautiful, but conditions can sometimes be brutal. You’ll need to protect yourself from the heat and dryness, naturally; but the desert can also pelt you with sand, dust and high winds, plus the temperatures can drop way down at night.
Dressy clothes (again, depending on your exact destination). Silk and cotton are great. Canvas bag or backpack Sunhat that fits snugly or ties under the chin Windbreaker jacket with hood Sweater for cool nights Shorts Long pants (lightweight khakis plus jeans) Comfortable shoes and/or hiking boots Sunscreen Lip balm containing sunscreen Insect repellant Sunglasses Light, tight-knit scarf or bandanna (for wind, sun and sand protection, plus for mopping your brow) Swimsuits (just in case there’s a pool, lake or oasis in sight) Dust-proof camera Moisturizer (big time!)
Ski or Snowboarding Trip
After two long paragraphs in the tropics and desert, a trip to a ski lodge sounds pretty refreshing to me. Of course, this list should work for any wintry destination, so long as you take into account rental of ice skates, skis or whatever equipment you lovebirds need to ideally frolic in the snow. Remember, before you frolic, plan to dress in layers. It’s the best way to stay warm and comfortable, plus you can peel down to just the right layer in order to enjoy the hot chocolate or coffee nudge back at the lodge.
Long underwear (they have great and very attractive silk and synthetic long johns available these days) Shirts and turtlenecks Snow suit or skiwear Scarves and hats and gloves (thermal, if you’ll need them) Lots of good, warm, moisture-wicking socks Sunscreen (you can get a vicious burn from the sun reflecting off the snow) Lip balm containing sunscreen Whatever indoor clothes you’ve chosen, including the dressy dresses and suits for evenings out or at the resort or lodge Sunglasses and goggles, plus anti-fog wipes Handkerchief Water-resistant camera Street boots and shoes Swimsuits (if there is a spa or indoor pool available) Moisturizer
Adventure Honeymoon
There are so many possible adventure honeymoons, I hesitate to even mention them; your travel agent and particular destination and travel package will determine most of what you‘ll need to be properly outfitted. However, here are a few items you may need, regardless of where your adventure takes you.
Comfortable backpack Sunglasses Sunscreen Camera (designed for the conditions you’ll be in) Hiking boots (pre-broken-in) and/or swim shoes Sun hat Lip balm Insect repellant Moisture-wicking socks Cotton clothing Binoculars Compass (or GPD) First aid kit Moisturizer (always, always moisturizer)
Again, for any journey, but for an adventure honeymoon in particular, check with your tour guide or travel expert for a complete list, plus a heads up on what is and isn’t appropriate at your honeymoon destination. Happy packing! As ever, if you have any advice you’d like to pass along, or questions on packing or anything else travel- or honeymoon-related, just drop me a line at honeymoon.life tips.com.
Yours for TheBigDay,
Jill
